Zyxel NAS540 - Making it a supported platform

Postby technosf » Tue Oct 27, 2015 7:43 pm

The Zyxel 540 is now available in the US, and at sub $200, it is an affordable and more powerful alternative to the other NAS boxes supported by ArchLinuxArm (NSA325, NSA320). It also has the advantage of having two Gbit interfaces and USB3 all-round, which makes it a good fit for router duties (something my 325 did with aplomb, but required USB ethernet dongles :( )

I would like to reach out to you all to gauge interest in getting the NAS540 a supported ArchLinuxArm platform.

Please reply to this thread if you would wish to move to this platform, and if you can subsidize and donate to any hardware purchase required by our super board opos for the work that would need to make this happen, should they too want to take it forward.

Thank you,

T

Thanks for posting and sharing!

A quick comparison of the two:

Zyxel 325 - Dual Core (Marvell) 1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, 1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 2 drive bays (SATA)
Zyxel 540 - Dual Core (FreeScale FS1024) 1.2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 3 USB 3.0 ports, 2 Gigabit Ethernet, SDXC reader, 4 drive bays (SATA)

There is also a Zyxel 520 which looks to be a two drive bay version of the 540.

I really dig the dual ethernet, additional USB 3.0 ports and SDXC reader and additional memory. Too bad, the CPU is only 1.2Ghz though which I believe will be the bottleneck for the system. Not sure how Freescale versus Marvell compares though.

Where do you see it in the U.S for sub $200? I know the NSA325 is currently only $110 or so on Amazon.

$185 : http://www.provantage.com/zyxel-nas540~7ZYX90TQ.htm?source=googleps&gclid=CjwKEAjwwbyxBRCS74T049iEp0wSJACkO5v1Oog-wHuYxMbJ6Crw98GFoKZf70znFPNpFrfJapNdDxoC7_bw_wcB

I would hope that 1.2G ARMv7 would at least be equivalent to an 1.6G ARMv5, especially when taking into consideration twice as much memory, improved SMP and Floating point performance.

At the very least, it replaces the 325 and should make it much easier to use as a router with the two Gbits.

It's going to be the same as the other ARMv7 platforms.

It will depend on whether the kernel has support for the crypto acceleration engine or not. If it does, you may be able to use cryptodev with it.

Get one to a core developer, we'll see what we can do to make it happen.
