How to install ArchLinuxARM on Embedsky E8 Mini-PC?

Postby Nicoletta » Tue Feb 09, 2016 7:28 am

Hi everyone,

I have recently acquired an Embedsky E8 Mini-PC:
http://en.embedsky.com/product_info.php ... 167&id=165
CPU: Samsung S5PV210 Cortex A8
RAM: DDR2 512M
FLASH: 4GB

All the manuals I found are in Chinese, so I'm a little lost here. Also, I'm not that experienced with Linux.

This is what I get when I connect with Putty through the serial port:

I have created an ArchLinuxARM bootable USB thumbdrive and tried to get the E8 to boot from it:

And then it doesn't go on.
So I don't know what's happening here. It doesn't look to me like it's trying to boot from the USB drive.

Could anybody help this poor dummie giving me a solution for dummies? ;D

Many thanks!

Re: How to install ArchLinuxARM on an Embedsky E8 Mini-PC?

Postby tlgimenes » Tue Feb 09, 2016 6:39 pm

Hello Nicoletta !

Well, I don't really know how your board works, but it looks to me it's a very nice board that you have, congrats :)

As far as my knowledge goes, you've done almost all the steps right, and I can suppose you are trying to boot the Arch Linux root filesystem (RFS) from a USB drive.

The only step that is wrong in my opinion is setting the root parameter on the kernel command line as $this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'root=/dev/usb/hiddev0')

Usually, the main storage device ( hard drives, USB drives, etc ) are under the path of /dev/sda. If you want to boot the first partition of this drive, which is the case if you just flashed the ArchLinux image, I think you should just write, on your kernel parameters
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'root=/dev/sda1')

Please let me know your progress :)

Thank you tlgimenes for your help!

Actually, no, I didn't go as far as flashing the ArchLinux image. I have no idea how to do that on this board :(

I was actually trying to boot directly from the usb thumb drive, but at this point I'm thinking it's not possible on this board (maybe?)

----

In the meantime, I have been experimenting with the help of the Chinese manuals and automatic translation (didn't really help making things clear in a definitive way).

I was able to follow their procedure to install Ubuntu into the board, which of course is incredibly heavy and I don't want it. Also, I succeded in installing Android with their procedure, but it's not suitable to my needs.

The procedure consists in preparing an SD card with some files inside the directory \images
ubuntu1204_20130821_camera.tar.bz2 --> Ubuntu file system
zImage_E8_linux_20130823.bin --> Linux Kernel
EmbedSky.ini --> confing file

The ini file is as follows (in this case I am installing Ubuntu because I verified that the procedure works)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '#')### This is E8 SD config files ####
operating condition=install
OS Type=ubuntu
LED indicator=off
Beep=off

#### Others ####
bootloader=images\u-boot_E8_20130823.bin
LOGO=images\logo_640x480.bin
#### Others end ####

#### Linux ####
kernel=images\u-boot_E8_20130826.bin
rootfs=images\rootfs_linux_v1.4.tar.bz2
#### Linux end ####

#### Windows CE ####
NK=images\wince\NK.bin
#### Windows CE end ####

#### Android ####
kernel=images/zImage_E8_android_20130823.bin
rootfs=images/rootfs_android_4.0.4_E8_20130823.tar.bz2
#### Android end ####

#### Ubuntu ####
kernel=images/zImage_E8_linux_20130823.bin
rootfs=images/ubuntu1204_20130821_camera.tar.bz2

uCOS-II Image=images\uCOS-II\E8_UCOS-II.bin
#### uCOS-II end ####

#### User Application ####
Application Image=images\UserAPPS\E8_Test.bin
#### User Application end #####

Then, I have to power on the board while pressing both side buttons until the E8 main menu shows up:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'OK*** Warning - using default environment

##### EmbedSky BIOS for SKY210/TQ210 #####

Then I have to choose "9" to access the partition menu:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '##### Partition Menu #####

[3] Erase Env partition
[4] Format the 1st partition to FAT32

Then choose from the partition menu the option number 1 to create 2 partitions:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Enter your selection: 1

')

And then option number 3 to erase env parameters:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Enter your selection: 3
writing env.. 17, 32
MMC write: dev # 0, block # 17, count 32 ... 32 blocks written: OK

')

And then from the main menu I choose 0 to set boot parameters:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '##### Parameter Menu #####
[1] Set NFS boot parameter
[2] Set EXT4FS boot parameter for Android
[3] Set EXT4FS boot parameter for Ubuntu

[g] Configuration 3g module.
[k] Set default boot kernel type.
[d] Delete parameter
[s] Save the parameters to board.
[q] Return main Menu
Enter your selection:
')

From the parameters menu I choose the option number 5 to set Set RAMFS boot parameter for Recovery mode:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Enter your selection: 5
bootargs: initrd=0x30A00000,6M root=/dev/ram0 rw init=/linuxrc console=ttySAC0 mem=512M
bootcmd: movi read kernel C0008000; movi read ramdisk 30A00000 600000; bootm C0008000 30A00000
')

Back to the main menu, booting the board copies the system from the SD to the flash.

Everything goes OK.

Then, again I power on the board while pressing both side buttons until the E8 main menu shows up and I choose 0 for the boot menu, then the option number 3 “set EXT4FS boot parameters for Ubuntu”:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Enter your selection: 3
bootargs: noinitrd root=/dev/mmcblk0p3 rw rootfstype=ext4 rootwait init=/init console=ttySAC0
kernel_type: kernel_linux
bootcmd: movi read kernel_linux C0008000; bootm C0008000
')

At this point, powering on the board will boot Ubuntu.

So I'm wondering: how can I create an archive to substitute the Ubuntu file system "ubuntu1204_20130821_camera.tar.bz2" with an ArchLinux file system? Is this the right question? Am I missing something?

Re: How to install ArchLinuxARM on Embedsky E8 Mini-PC?

Postby tlgimenes » Fri Feb 12, 2016 2:02 pm

Hello again :)

So, I think it's possible to have ArchLinux installed on an external USB stick or on Ubuntu's partition.

Let's first try to install it under Ubuntu's partition because I think it should be easier. All we will need is another PC running linux.

First, download the ArchLinux image. I think ArchLinuxARM-armv7-latest.tar.gz best fits your board, but if you have a better version, please use yours instead. We will use the folder embedsky as our work area. Open a terminal and type
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
mkdir embedsky && mkdir embedsky/arch && mkdir embedsky/ubuntu # Create folders
cd embedsky # Enter work area
wget http://br.mirror.archlinuxarm.org/os/ArchLinuxARM-armv7-latest.tar.gz # Download archLinux
tar -zxvf ArchLinuxARM-armv7-latest.tar.gz -C arch # Extract archlinux to arch folder
tar -zxvf path/to/ubuntu/file -C ubuntu # Extract ubuntu to ubuntu folder
cp -r ubuntu/lib/modules arch/lib/ # Copy kernel modules from ubuntu to arch linux
cd arch # Enter arch folder
tar -cjvf ArchLinuxARM-embedsky.tar.bz2 * # Create archLinux image
')
If everything goes well, you should have now a working copy of ArchLinux in the folder embedsky/arch named ArchLinuxARM-embedsky.tar.bz2

Now we need to modify the configuration file "EmbedSky.ini" . In a text editor, open this file and replace
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
#### Ubuntu ####
kernel=images/zImage_E8_linux_20130823.bin
rootfs=images/ubuntu1204_20130821_camera.tar.bz2
#### Ubuntu end ####
')
to
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
#### Ubuntu ####
kernel=images/zImage_E8_linux_20130823.bin
rootfs=images/ArchLinuxARM-embedsky.tar.bz2
#### Ubuntu end ####
')

Now just copy the file ArchLinuxARM-embedsky.tar.bz2 to the image/ folder on your SD card and follow the same steps of your previous post.

If it works and you still want to install it on a USB stick, please post here bellow and we will try to make it work with a USB stick

cheers \o/

Thank you for the amazing help!

I prepared everything like you said, then I transfered the OS to the flash, but when I boot the board... this is what I get:

Re: How to install ArchLinuxARM on Embedsky E8 Mini-PC?

Postby tlgimenes » Mon Feb 15, 2016 10:45 am

Hello again :)

It looks like it couldn't find systemd because we are using the path /init instead of /sbin/init. To fix the problem we could just create a link to systemd. To do this, lets change your ArchLinux .tar.gz file. Go to your embedsky/arch folder that you created on the previous post and type

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
ln -s ./lib/systemd/systemd init # Create the link

Re: How to install ArchLinuxARM on Embedsky E8 Mini-PC?

Hello :)

I may have some bad news for you. I was reading this post http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/116887/self-built-kernel-failed-to-mount-dev-no-such-device and they say this happens because the linux kernel you are using doesn't have the CONFIG_DEVTMPFS variable set on the kernel configuration file.

If it is true, you have three possibilities:
1) Recompile your kernel with this option set, if the kernel you are using supports this feature
2) Compile a mainline kernel which won't have support for some on your board's devices
3) Get someone with more knowledge than me to help you

Wish you lucky with your board ...
