Solved: RPi 2: bcm2708-rng module missing after update

Postby NeilMunday » Thu Apr 14, 2016 9:51 pm

Hi,

After updating my Raspberry Pi 2 this week which installed the "4.4.7-1-ARCH" kernel, the bcm2708-rng is no longer installed which causes the systemd-modules-load.service to fail at boot time.

This kernel module was previously supplied by the "linux-raspberrypi" package.

I know can make the systemd-modules-load.service service start correctly by removing the bcm2708-rng from /etc/modules-load.d/raspberrypi.conf but isn't this module needed?

Cheers,

Neil.

There were 2 Modules for the Random Number Generator (rng), but I don't know the reason why bcm2835_rng didn't work for Rpi 1 and 2 before. As far as I know bcm2835_rng should replace bcm2808_rng. So either you can change the module in modules-load.d or just remove the old one, bmc2835_rng should load automatically.

Ah yes, you are correct - I missed the bcm2835_rng in the lsmod output previously.

I have therefore removed the bmc2708-rng module from loading at boot.

Thanks,

Neil.
