$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sdrider', 'U')pdated to 4.9.13-6 tonight. Rebooted, and it came back fine - ie. seems to be back to normal. I rebooted a few times to test it out. It seems to take a little longer to reboot than before - up to 60 seconds, as opposed to ~25 or so before. But after several reboots, it has come back consistently every time without me having to hard power off.

Not ready to upgrade my internet router odroid just yet, but so far 4.9.13-6 is looking a lot more stable than the first few 4.9.13's were a week or two ago.

Not working here. Did a clean install, updated, and rebooted. No blue light. Don't have TTL cable yet unfortunately.

I am getting that no modules added warning in mkinitcpio. Did that crop up for you, sdrider?

Full warning, if it matters:
==> WARNING: No modules were added to the image. This is probably not what you want.

Here's what a re-install of the kernel shows for me:

So yes, I'm getting the same message as you: 'No modules were added to the image.' But the kernel boots and runs fine for me.

4.9.13-6 does not work for me, not even after reinstalling the kernel package. Same as the previous 4.9 kernels.

After upgrade to 4.9.13-8 Odroid didn't booted once. After plugging power on and off, it booted just fine. Still little strange behavior but good enough for me.
Btw thank you developers, it has to be real pain upgrading several years old kernel with actual one.

I just updated an Odroid XU4 to kernel 4.9.13-8-ARCH and I am not able to get it to reboot. Not even when the power is hard cycled like viky suggested. Here is the output of the update:

Note the warning:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '==> WARNING: No modules were added to the image. This is probably not what you want.')

When I build an image with dd on an eMMC module I have to boot the eMMC with a SD that has the same image and run
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'cd /boot
./sd_fusing.sh /dev/mmcblk0')
in order for the eMMC to boot before the upgrade.

I have tried this same recovery proceedure (boot with an SD) and it does not fix the issue.

Based on the comments in this thread it looks like reverting to the old kernel fixes the problem.

Anyone have an idea to fix the 4.9.13-8-ARCH kernel?

I believe the 4.9.20-1 kernel is safe. I've rebooted 4 times without issues. Is anyone having issues with this release/can confirm?

Re: ODROID-XU4 fails to boot after update

Postby zskolnik » Tue Apr 04, 2017 7:55 pm

I have no luck with the 4.9.20-1 kernel, the previous 4.9 versions (at least the ones I tried) are not working either. Doing a clean install with the latest (2017.04) packages as written in the installation instructions on the homepage also leaves me with an unbootable Odroid XU4:
-Power led is on
-Ethernet led is on, but the device does not show up on the local network
-No HDMI output
-No Heartbeat (blue led is off)
-USB devices are not powered it seems

Power cycle/leaving the device to cool did not solve my problem. As I have no HDMI output or ethernet connectivity on the device, and I unfortunately don't have access to an UART cable right now, I don't know what else could I check with the new kernel.

But I do have an SDCard with the old kernel and I saved the 2017.03 rootfs package from the homepage so I can boot up the device and create working installations.

The only modification I have from a stock Odroid XU4 is that I removed the cooling fan and installed a bigger heatsink. Not sure if it's relevant, but might be.

If there is anything I can check with the device to help the cause please let me know.

Can confirm 4.9.20-1 is working well for me, reboots fine. On the one odroid-xu4 that I've upgraded, anyway. Still holding out on my main odroid-xu4 router until either the pace of kernel change smooths out or I start hearing lots of reports of success from this thread.

Is the fan spinning ok? How are the idle temps and max temps with the latest version? I know that 4.9.13 had higher idle temps and that's why I downgraded.

4.9.X kernel still not booting on my XU3.

I did a fresh ArchLinuxARM-odroid-xu3-latest.tar.gz onto an SDcard and that will not boot either.
the new install image seems to have the 4.9.x kernel now, though the previous install image boots ok.

So beware testing the 4.9 kernel, as you will not be able to rescue it with the current install images!
