Chance of running on Drobo 5N (Marvell MV78460) ?

Postby zand » Tue May 23, 2017 12:27 am

What's the chance that the Drobo 5N NAS (http://naschart.com/drobo/drobo-5n-5n-153) would be able to run Arch Linux?

The hardware specs says it runs a Marvell MV78460, and I see a number of Marvell processors supported by Arch. The box definitely runs Linux (uname -a gives 'Linux Drobo5N 3.2.58-2 #1 SMP Tue Nov 15 10:05:59 PST 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux'). The kernel might even already have support? (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/tree/arch/arm/boot/dts/armada-xp-mv78460.dtsi?h=v4.11.2). Everything looks like a normal Linux box except for the Drobo-isms.

/proc/cpuinfo looks like this:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Processor : Marvell PJ4Bv7 Processor rev 2 (v7l)
processor : 0
BogoMIPS : 1196.85

processor : 1
BogoMIPS : 1196.85

processor : 2
BogoMIPS : 1196.85

Features : swp half thumb fastmult vfp edsp vfpv3 tls
CPU implementer : 0x56
CPU architecture: 7
CPU variant : 0x2
CPU part : 0x584
CPU revision : 2

Hardware : Marvell Armada XP Development Board
Revision : 0000
Serial : 0000000000000000')

Technically, it is possible.

What you'll need is any differences in what Drobo has changed in their kernel sources, and a functional DTS made out of that.

To help with this, you should acquire a serial terminal on the device, check the vanilla tree for such a DTS, and if not present, contact Drobo about their kernel source tarball.
