youtube lag when VC4 V3D activated

Postby gufkl » Sat Sep 30, 2017 5:03 am

Hi
does anyone use the openGL VC4 V3D 2.1 driver?
do you feel the memory bump when activating it? and when trying to run video on youtube its be lag? not like before activating it.
this is my setting /boot/config.txt :

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# See / boot / overlays / README for all available options
gpu_mem = 128
initramfs initramfs-linux.img followkernel
dtparam = audio = on
audio_pwm_mode = 2
avoid_warnings = 2
dtoverlay = vc4-kms-v3d
')

before its gpu_mem = 64 resulted in lag when opening youtube, then I increase to 128 and lag felt less.
but it does not feel as smooth as before activating vc4-kms-v3d.
is there a solution so that its performance as before without disabling the driver?
in theory should be more smoothly after activating the driver, but the opposite happens.
thx a lot
edit : i run youtube in Chromium 61 on my Raspberry Pi 3

Hi,
I test the vc4 driver ocasionally with following config.txt

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'gpu_mem=16
initramfs initramfs-linux.img followkernel
hdmi_drive=2
avoid_warnings=2
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d')
vc4 makes it's cma memory allotment at boot time, you don't need high gpu_mem.
With your config.txt if you open alsamixer you should find 2 sound cards, the bcm one and vc4-hdmi. hdmi sound was introduced in the driver some months ago. Taking out the dtparam line makes alsa find the vc4-hdmi card as default. Sound is quite nice but alsa does not provide volume control. You must rely on the application volume control or probably install pulseaudio/pavucontrol, I have not tested.
I do not find any significant lag in youtube.
