I'm not sure what happened. I had the boot partition mounted to /boot in fstab, so it should have installed to the correct place. and it looks like the boot partition somehow got updated to the new u-boot, because the u-boot.bin file has a 9/14 date and so did the boot.ini.pacnew file. I'm not sure why it failed. It seems that it failed right after a dd copy of the u-boot.bin file.

@woody The update stores the files in /boot so it gets that right but if you read my post in the other thread carefully you see that to actually do the flash it looks to the drive containing root. And I suggested looking first to see if /boot is a mount point which is the case when it is on a different drive. And I offered code to do the right thing.

Note that the flash is not just storing files in /boot but rather using dd to write u-boot.bin in specific raw locations.

In my case, boot is on the same drive, but in a different partition. I think you're right, though, that 'dd' is doing a low-level write and that probably messed up the rootfs partition. I'll try to remember that and figure out another way to update next time.
