sound working on CLI, but not GUI

I'm trying to learn more about Archlinux on my Pi 3B+, so I'm building and testing in stages.
I have the linux installed and booting and then I added lxde, alsa-utils, vlc, xf86-video-fbdev.
I can play a wav file using aplay test.wav just fine before LXDE is started with xinit /usr/bin/lxsession.

Next I installed vlc so I could play a .m4a file from LXDE. However in LXDE I have no audio devices.

Any idea how to get audio devices with LXDE is running?

I must have missed a step. repeated the install of everything and got LXDE with alsa sound to work
