rpi4: Any way to run kodi-x11 or kodi-wayland?

Postby knprk » Tue Mar 17, 2020 2:12 pm

I would like to run kodi alongside a minimal desktop environment. That is, I would like to start kodi from sway or i3 and switch between it and other graphical stuff. The kodi-rbp4 package provides only kodi-gbm, which can't be started from within x or wayland and doesn't allow switching virtual terminals, so that in order to start kodi I have to log in on another tty first, and in order to get back, I have to close kodi.

I'm guessing the other kodi packages in the repo are the same in that regard. So, is it just not possible to run kodi in a non-gbm way on an rpi4? Is there anything I can do? Can I build my own kodi-x11 or kodi-wayland package for the rpi4?

P. S. to make my question more clear perhaps: Is there any way to rum kodi and sway/i3 at the same time on a rpi4?

You might wanna ask on the kodi forums but my understanding is that HW acceleration is only available on gbm. Note that the version we are shipping is not upstream's, it's the leia_pi4 branch from popcornmix (on the Kodi dev team).

All right, thanks for the answer. I’ve figured there are better ways to watch an occasional movie in my use case (sway, chromium, jellyfin-mpv-shim, peerflix!). All 1080p AVC files and even some 1080p HEVC files play fine using mpv with software decoding.
