Default eth0 is controlled by nothing...

Postby camosoul » Fri Oct 15, 2021 5:09 pm

I need to alter the behavior of eth0. It is currently working. It pulls an IP from my router's DHCP server whenever I plug in an Ethernet cable.

That's great. It's working.

But...

I have no idea why it's working, and have no power to control it.

I look in /etc/netctl, and there's nothing there.

Yet, eth0 is working. Perfectly. It shouldn't be.

What's happening? How do I control eth0? How do I assign a static IP to eth0?

It seems to be magic that I can't control.

I don't think it matters, but this is an XU4. It seems to be working fine except for the fact that I have no way to control the networking. If there's any documentation, I can't find it...

Look on the Arch wiki for systemd-networkd

Found it... But it's completely non-functional.

I start the wpa_supplicant process for wlan0, status says it's running.

But, wlan0 has no carrier.

dhcpcd@wlan0 fails.

This is incomprehensible. My son and I both have been reading and re-reading these docs for hours and we cannot figure out what to do. It just doesn't work.

netctl is better because it works. systemd-networkd doesn't make any sense and does not work.

It seems like wpa_supplicant doesn't do it's job, while lying to us and saying that it is doing it's job.

systemctl status wpa_supplicant@wlan0

In green text, it says it's active and running.

But, this is a lie.

networkctl says no-carrier.

The router shows that nothing is has authenticated.

wpa_supplicant service is lying. It is not running. It is not active.

How do I make it stop lying to me?

I unplugged it, threw it against the wall. Took it outside, stomped on it, kicked it around int he dirt... Brought it back in. Plugged it in.

It's working perfectly. I changed nothing. All I did was beat the crap out of it. Frankly, it should be broken.

Hooray for stupid nerd garbage.
