firmware update breaks wifi on Rpi3

Postby jazztickets » Sat Jan 22, 2022 12:18 am

Upgrading to linux-firmware-20220119.0c6a7b3 removes the wlan0 interface. I had to downgrade to 20211216.f682ecb to fix it.

Likely due to compression and older kernels not support it. Fix in the works. Thanks for reporting.

Same with Raspberry Pi 4, which now seems to only be able to use one network interface.

I have a Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter, which I have been using as the second wireless NIC along with the on-board wifi.
After upgrade, only the Ralink seen and working, and if a LAN cable plugged in and eth0 used, the ralink is not available despite present as seen with lsusb.

@graysky do you know if the fix is included in kernel-rpi 5.10.94-1? Because I updated today and it still isn't working...

The fix was to the firmware package, not the kernel. Anything in dmesg?

I'm getting weirdness with the update as well, which manifests itself as such: A RPi3B+ Plugged into HDMI at power-on: works fine, but HDMI unplugged and I get a couple of flashes on the green LED and that's it: otherwise brick-like.

Here're my relevant package versions:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
[dhaines@mpdpi ~]$ sudo pacman -Q | grep rasp\\\|linux\\\|systemd
archlinuxarm-keyring 20140119-1
firmware-raspberrypi 20211222-1
linux-aarch64 5.16.3-1
linux-api-headers 5.12.3-1
linux-firmware 20220119.0c6a7b3-2.1
linux-firmware-whence 20220119.0c6a7b3-2.1
raspberrypi-bootloader 20220127-2
systemd 250.3-2
systemd-libs 250.3-2
systemd-sysvcompat 250.3-2
uboot-raspberrypi 2021.04-1

Another one seeing weirdness with updates. I have headless RPi4 and RPi3 configure identically and running linux-rpi on the same wifi network. After recent updates, the RPi4 will not connect to the wifi, constantly outputting wlan0 CTRL-EVENT-ASSOC-REJECT errors. After a heap of trial and error, I found that deleting the dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d line in /boot/config.txt fixes the problem.

Actually, my issue looks to be a bug in wpa_supplicant which was upgraded 2:2.9-8 -> 2:2.10-1 a few days ago. I get the same CTRL-EVENT-ASSOC-REJECT errors as this.
