[kodi-rpi] crashes "eglSwap Buffers failed (EGL_BAD_ALLOC)"

Postby pejobo » Tue Aug 25, 2026 3:46 pm

I'm on linux-rpi kernel and since a recent update (probably kernel-rpi from 6.18.18) kodi crashes on most (but not all) videos.
This is on Pi 4 with 4GB.
Last entry in kodi.old.log

eglSwap Buffers failed (EGL_BAD_ALLOC)

I found no recent posts describing that problem, so I assume this is my set up?
Would be nice if someone could confirm it's working for her / him <3

I am using kodi-rpi-git and no such issues. The development in Omega is dead now and Piers is super stable. If you don't have a reason to stay on Omega, git the git package a try.

Thank you for the suggestion. But I wanted first to pin-point the issue, since I don't believe it's a kodi issue - as you mentioned, there are no updates any more for the current stable version.
I played around with video settings and despite different settings, playing a video still crashes kodi immediately.
The setting which finally fixed it was disabling "Adjust display refresh rate", which I had sitting at "At start / stop" before.

That is what I'm seeing in dmesg for the crashes:

cma: __cma_alloc: linux,cma: alloc failed, req-size: 185 pages, ret: -4
cma: number of available pages:
cma: range 0: +90@1062+61@1219+11@3829+128@3968+22@6122+22@8170+22@10218+22@12266+71@12473+71@12729+71@12985+71@13241+71@13497+71@13753+71@14009+71@14265+71@14521+71@14777+116039@15033
cma:
=> 117127 free of 131072 total pages

These are the updates I performed recently (omitting probably unrelated packages), probably the one on the 20th was the offending one:

[2026-08-20T22:49:55+0200] [ALPM] upgraded libdrm (2.4.133-1 -> 2.4.134-1)
[2026-08-20T22:51:05+0200] [ALPM] upgraded linux-rpi (6.18.29-1 -> 6.18.44-1)
[2026-08-20T22:51:27+0200] [ALPM] upgraded mesa (1:26.0.6-1 -> 1:26.1.7-1)
[2026-08-21T22:29:57+0200] [ALPM] upgraded linux-rpi (6.18.44-1 -> 6.18.45-1)
[2026-08-21T22:30:01+0200] [ALPM] upgraded mesa (1:26.1.7-1 -> 1:26.1.8-1)
[2026-08-24T22:26:47+0200] [ALPM] upgraded mesa (1:26.1.8-1 -> 1:26.2.1-1)
[2026-08-24T22:27:04+0200] [ALPM] upgraded linux-rpi (6.18.45-1 -> 6.18.46-1)

Sadly I only keep the last two package versions in the cache, so I cannot test with kernel or mesa version before that date.

Ah, I missed that there was a firmware update, too:

[2026-08-20T22:50:13+0200] [ALPM] upgraded firmware-raspberrypi (20240831-2 -> 20260311-1)

I could try downgrading this..
