Active archive?

OK what am I doing wrong with bring up the virtual machine:

qemu-system-arm -nographic -M versatilepb -cpu arm926 -m 256M -kernel zImage -initrd initramfs-linux.img -dtb kirkwood-nsa325.dtb -hda root.iso -append "root=/dev/sda"

The root.iso is an ext4 formatted iso image of my nsa325 set up. When I run this I get no output at all, but it uses alot of CPU time till I kill the process. So it looks like it isn't coming up at all. Alas I'm not yet good with QEMU to know how to get more information on what is happening and going wrong.
