Seagate GoflexNet & USB HUB

Postby bloodragon » Tue Aug 30, 2011 11:58 am

HI,
I've successfully installed ArchlinuxARM on a Seagate Goflex Net on a 2TB USB hdd directly attached to the usb port of the goflex.
Now i've buyed a cheap 7-port USB HUB external powered (5v - 2A) and used to connect the usb hdd to the goflex, but the boot just hangs. If I reconnect the usb hdd directly the boot goes fine.

There is a way to use the usb hub?

Thanks in advice and sorry for my poor english

Hi!

I have an Nortek USB422 USB HUB. I attached a flash drive and a memory card reader together, and a SATA HDD on SATA1. The GoFlex Net booted without problem from the flash drive.

Do you have installed archlinuxarm with the usb hub (plus pendrive and card reader) already connected, or just with the usb pendrive?

Hi!

I have installed the ArchLinuxArm without the usb hub, just with the pendrive. Later I have tested with the hub+pendrive+card reader.

New Update:
with a simple usb hub (3 ports external power) the goflex boot from the usb hd without problems.
With the external powered usb hub (7 ports) it doesn't...

Everything in my book points to a hub that is faulty in some way. There really isn't a true standard on hubs, but from my experience you have either known-good brand like Belkin, or some off-brand/no-name brand that "works" but has inexplicable flaws. The USB market isn't exactly rated, compared, reviewed, and analyzed along the lines of processors and the like, but there are still "good brands" and "I bought this because it was cheap." Simple test: load up all ports on your hub with bus-powered hard drives and run transactions concurrently among them all.

The bigger issue for me though: you have a GoFlex Net with two perfectly awesome SATA ports, and you're messing around with USB? I have two of the devices in my stable, and honestly I'd never consider booting from USB.

Indeed it's true that i won't boot from SATA... But i've an external 3.5 usb disk and i don't know how i can make this disk usable by the 2.5 sata port of goflex?
There's a sort of tutorial?
PS: here is my dmesg(http://pastebin.com/sZ4zS8Qa) the line "device descriptor read/64, error -71" maybe will point to the bad usb hub i have.
Thanks in advice
