If you can get to anything its not a brick, its just not working right.

Hi,
i also have the same pb with mygoflex

my drive just return to stock firmware (seagate).
i've make a install on a usb disk (from linux arch for goflex home)
first my goflex boot well on usb key but it was impossible to return on goflex 'stock'
when i extract my usb key the goflex began to boot and stand for hours on green led flash
so i tried to use netconsole and my problems begans
my first key was kingston 1gb and i show that the blksize is not good (32kb!!)
so i make a tar of this key and extract to another with an ext3 2kb block
this day i put the new key in goflex (without disk 3.5)
on the first boot i was on recovery console (why i don't know)
so i found fw_setenv (witch is not in the distro arch) and make fw_setenv to modify ip @ of the netconsole on goflex
(have you done this ?)
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=200
in particular this line line :
fw_setenv preboot 'run if_netconsole start_netconsole' ?
after the reboot i came to the pb that you describe ...

to came out here's what i do :
usb start
usbboot 0:1 0 (not sure of the order type help usbboot)
boot

and my goflex boot to ubit (0.6)
by comparing the env i saw that preboot was modify in order to adjust ip for netconsole
here's my line :
fw_setenv preboot 'run ubi_start silent_boot; run nc_test nc_start; run usb_start; run if_netconsole; start_netconsole;'

you can view that all usb has return ;)

after the reboot : i was on ubit ... not on archlinux
i tried this
chain_install goflexhome
chain_revert
uboot_uptodate

there was a error message for uboot_uptodate (sorry forget to copy/paste)

so ... i reboot (my disk 1tb was in place during this phase)
and you know what : i was on original loader (from seagate)

i dont know why but for the moment i prefer this to my semi brick ;)

hope this help

good luck
