N00bie trying to reinstall Everything from the scratch!

Postby montsa007 » Wed Aug 01, 2012 6:04 am

Hello all,

First things first, am a complete n00b to linux, and know nothing about it. All I can do is login to putty, nothing else.

I had purchased this Goflex base, a pen drive with Webmin, Itransmission and Samba on it plugged into the base and a 1 TB Seagate hard drive to store the downloads.

Used to download everything fine but I had a bad habit of just switching off the device without doing a proper shutdown by going into webmin (Because I had to run for office in the morning and was a pain in the bum to do the whole proper shutdown, which I believe caused the software to break). It wont let me login to Itransmission or Webmin lately.

I formatted the pen drive yesterday on a windows laptop and inserted it in the base, removed the HDD and tried the following without any success - http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... oflex-home

ssh USERNAME_hipserv2_seagateplug_XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX@GOFLEX_HOME_IP
(put the username as 'root' as this is what I used to login into putty)
Tried both commands
ssh root_hipserv2_seagateplug_XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX@GOFLEX_HOME_192.168.0.150
root_hipserv2_seagateplug_XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX@GOFLEX_HOME_192.168.0.150
Can someone please help me as to how to proceed?

P.S. - The device was previously running absolutely fine so am pretty sure, what you call bootloader/kernel on the base is hacked?

Yes, bootloader was overwritten so that's why it won't boot up.

There are 2 options:
1.restore the device to factory and then start over, like you did last time: http://support.goflexhome.hipserv.com/e ... index.html

2. Get a linux Live cd, format the USB drive as ext3, and extract archlinuxarm tarball into it.

First is self explanatory, second is all over this forum :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('moonman', 'Y')es, bootloader was overwritten so that's why it won't boot up.

Hi,
Many thanks for replying so quick!
I will probably use the 1st method as it sounds pretty easy, could you please tell me what do I put as the user after I restock it to factory firmware? (The 1st step in installing Archlinux)

Also, the seller who sold me this base has said that it won't be easy to go back to the factory firmware :(, I will try restoring the thing to the factory firmware and will try to do the archlinux install and I hope I don't break anything coz I really don't know what I am doing

I really tried everything you guys posted here.

-The Goflex home does not have a white light
-I cannot get the Goflex home connect to the Seagate Dashboard software (It just doesn't want to find it)
-I logged in to putty and somehow found that it has UBoot installed (The seller must have done something)

Here is what I did after I came home
-Tried to restore the base to stock/factory firmware but, it shows blinking green, then blinking orange and then steady green light
-Formatted the external HDD on a Windows PC, inserted in the base (Can see it now in the DHCP list)
-Tried running a bunch of commands without knowing what I am doing  (Pen drive was removed, just the HDD was connected)

I'll pay anyone $10-20 to please fix this mess + provide me a way to restore the image on the pen drive if something happens in future.

This ***** is something I cannot clean

As a last attempt, am writing the archlinux image in the pen drive and will try to get something done.
