Installing on existing ext3 partition

Postby Faelenor » Mon Aug 19, 2013 6:31 pm

I would like to know if it's possible to install arch linux on an existing ext3 partition (PogoPlug 2). I have a 2TB HD with lots of data on it and I don't want to backup it before installing arch linux. On the official installation instruction, can I skip to step 8?

Likely it wont work because it needs <20gb partition. But you can try

I was wondering that myself.....was wanting to skip the whole USB Flash drive.....due to the failure rate of writing to it so often, and just installing on my 1Tb drive. Might try that myself......connect the drive to my Kubutu Live CD and make the USB harddrive bootable...and TAR over the files.

Moonman....I read where it had to be less than 20gb partitions as well, but I am running fine on a Sandisk Cruzer fit 32bg flash drive partitioned for the full size.

Webmin shows the full capacity....I hope this wont be an issue later down the road....

Make and model: SanDisk Cruzer Fit | Cylinders: 8225280 | Partition format: MSDOS
1 Linux 31262458 blocks 1 3892

Ok, thanks. I didn't know about this possible 20GB limit. So, I guess the best would be to use a thumb drive to install the OS and hope it will work...

Well you see i know there was this limit before, but i don't know if it was lifted with the newer u-boot. Try and see if it works, if it doesn't then remove the files from hdd and use the flashdrive. Or the best thing is repartition your drive and make room for rootfs partition. Use Partedmagic? It allows repartitioning with data.
