Re: [How-To] Boot Entirely from SATA

I moved to my other drive, and using the 05-2012 fS I'm in. with the 12-2012, I booted ( actually got new entries in the logs) but I couldn't get an IP.

Now I'll try and get the big drive working.
Thanks

Has anyone investigated using a sata cdrom/dvd burner/rom as a boot-up device? This could make us noobs lives a lot simpler. I guess the first step is to see if the pogplug pro's bios (not to be confused with the NAND memory) supports the "El Torito Bootable CD Specification". The next step would be for one of the archlinux arm gods to develop a "live CD" ISO image that us noobs could download. If this works, the sky is the limit, beyond the clouds! :D

There is no "BIOS" on these devices. An the BOM code can't read filesystems. It is not possible without major modifications.

By bios, I meant the "tiny ROM that reads from SATA, then SPI, then NAND", and I guess you"re saying that it doesn't support the "el torito" specification. That's too bad.

Thank you for your reply.

By tiny, I mean really tiny. It won't be able to read the CDROM existing, let alone el-torito

Hi there,
first thanks for this great Guide here WarheadsSE, now my Pogoplug P24 is running Alarm.

I just took me some time, because althought i followed your guide briefly i first was not able to boot from the Sata drive.

After some hours of testing i have overwritten the uImage.no-pci from the tarball on the first page with that one from the current Archlinux tarball (in the folder /boot) and rerun the disk_create script.

Now my Pogoplug boots without problems into Alarm.

Maybe that is a hint for some others if they got stuck getting Alarm to start from Sata.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('leckmaul666', 'i') got it
pls try the older oxnas version.
i got success with :05-2012 oxnas
then the kernel worked for me
i got ssh coennection.

Then you're probably using the old kernels...just replace the uImages in uImage-folder from oxnas_sata_boot.tgz with the ones from update-oxnas.tar.gz...

Hi, i get also
led blinks wildly and then TURNS OFF,

Commands (with su et no sudo):
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '# ./disk_create (with no pci pogo B04) ')
→ but i didn't get error from dd about the uImage not writing, yet there is no partitions on sata disk !!.

After partitionning:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '

After booting on sata led blinks wildly f and then turns off.

Re: [How-To] Boot Entirely from SATA

Postby belga » Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:21 pm

Hi,

I get the same thing!

A few months ago, I managed to make it work.
The LED flashes few seconds and turn off, I have used root and not sudo.

looks like ipv6 may be making the gmac network driver crap.

For starters, interrupt uboot & add the below to bootargs
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
ipv6.disable=1
')
