bricked pogo video

Postby kenaynay » Mon May 14, 2012 3:53 pm

First: linux newb
second:archlinuxarm extreme newb

I bricked my pogo plugged, couldn't ssh into it, apparently my static ip didnt stick, so I can't get into it. Made a serial cable using a cable from a cdrom, a blank dp9 connector that i connect to a gigaware usb serial cable. Now using Putty, i can get a connection but the output is garbled and unreadable. I've tried different baud rates but the output is still garbled. Com settings are:
115200, 8, N, 1, N

Wires used in cable to pogo:
Pin 1 GRD Pin 2 Rx pin3 Tx

Db 9 config
Pin 2 Rx pin 3Rx pin 5 GRD

so pin 2 on the pogo side goes to pin3 on the db9 and pin3 on the pogo goes to pin 2 on db9
Pin1 on pogo goes to pin 5 on DB 9
this is considering the back on the unit is facing me and the white 4 pin connector in the pogo is away from me.

Can someone please advise me as how to clear up the terminal output problem so I can read it? Any info would be much appreciated. For any haters out there, say what you want, it can't be any worse than what i've said to myself already.

oh ok I DO need the fourth pin connected. I'm a little slow at times. 5 kids will do that to a man. now the question is where on the db9 does the wire for 3.3v go? I've read several posts about making the nokia cable work but one i read said the 4th pin wasn't used. thanks again for the response

You need to make sure that the serial connection you are attaching to it is RS232/TTL 3.3v, standard PC serial ports are 5v

Where did you set this static IP? You could just fire up a linux live-cd or live-usb, and edit the configuration.

Well, you need to make sure that the serial adapter is 3.3v, or you will fry the serial on your pogoplug. Unless your adapter is known to be 3.3v, I wouldn't use it.

Standard RS232 can actually be +/- 15V....most aren't anymore, but that's what the standard dictates.

i did try to edit the rc.conf file and set my ip address but it still never allowed me to pin or ssh into it. I'm guessing by what you two are saying that my cables won't work because they aren't 3.3v and thats why everyone uses the Nokia cable. The power to the transceiver in the usb/serial adapter should be coming from the usb port and not the pogoplug. I figured since i was getting a garbled output that my cable set up would work I just had something configured wrong, but i guess its caused by incorrect voltage?

Again thanks guys

kenaynay, are you aware that the Pogoplug Video has been recalled?

yes i know it was recalled. I've already gotten my replacement and there was no mention in anything i got about returning the old one so i was just trying out Archlinuxarm instead of tossing it.

ok here's another question if my host.conf file looks like this:

/etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#

#<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost.localdomain localhost

# End of file

shouldn't i change its hostname to alarm and 127.0.0.1 to my static ip i want it to have?
