PP Won't Boot With USB Hard Drive Attached

I cloned an existing set up to make a 2nd server. I think I changed all the variables but I clearly missed something.

If I reboot without powering off (removing power from the PP) I have no problem rebooting with the USB HD attached but if I start from scratch the PP hangs and will only restart if I disconnect the USB HD and restart the PP. After the PP has completed its startup I can plug the USB HD in and all is well.

Please note that if I 'uncomment" the 2nd line of the fstab the PP will not boot.

Any thoughts or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Try changing the "pass" entry on the first line to 0 instead of 1.
If that doesn't work comment out that line entirely and see if it boots.

Thanks for jumping on this, Tom.

I tried both of your suggestions. Neither changed the status quo. It still won't boot from a power off condition with USB HD attached.

Just so I understand.
With the "familymedia" drive attached, it won't boot, from a poweroff situation, but it will boot as a "reboot"

but without the "familymedia" drive it boots fine as a "reboot" or a full hard reboot ( unplug/replug)?

Thought I should bring you up to date on this morning's activity.

I remembered that prior to the cloning, I had tried a fresh install. That did not go well as there was not enough room on PP native storage for the ALARM download. Ever since that particular PP has behaved badly. I then used the instruction here: http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=1460&start=10#p32227 to try and get the PP back to normal.

This morning I reversed the instructions in that post and commented out the relevant line. The PP did not reboot so I unplugged it and attached my USB flash drive where ALARM resides and the FamilyMedia drive. When I plugged it in it booted up promptly (about 20 seconds) and all of the server files were available. I hoped I had fixed the problem that prompted this post. No Joy. I then did a HALT, unplugged the PP and plugged in again and the behavior I originally noted is still there.

One other thing. I have three PPs. Two work fine with the original ALARM USB flash drive. This one does not. no matter which USB FD I plug in I can not boot with the USB HD attached. Interestingly, The cloned USB FD does not boot in either PP with the USB HD attached.

It looks to me that there are two problems. One with this specific PP and the other with the cloned USB FD.

I think the way to proceed is to get the PP back to factory condition or at least back to the same status of the other two PPs that work. I have not found a way to clone PPs. I have found a backup solution but the author advises that he has not tried a restore. I know the PPs are pretty cheap these days but I hate throwing out hardware that can be made perfectly good with a little work (which for me means some solid learning along the way).

As always, any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Yes. And all three work fine with my 1.5TB Samsung USB HD using my original USB FD. None of them work properly using the cloned USB FD and the Seagate 2TB USB HD.

This drive was originally set up on a Raspberry Pi running Rasbian. Might ext4 format have something to do with this?

Its pretty clear that this is an issue with that drive, and not the PP. I try and avoid ext2. it gets corrupted pretty easily, ext3 with the journal or ext4 work much better IMO. Try running fsck on that drive, it appears to have some errors. Its possible that during a hard reboot it doesn't spin up fast enough, but one a soft reboot it doesn't have that problem.

I'd reached a similar conclusion. I did run e2fsck on it and found 4-5 errors which were corrected but the issue remains. FYI, the USB FD (boot drive) is ext2 and the USB HD (media storage) is ext4. I wonder if there is a script that would delay the mount for, say, 15 seconds?

I'm going to put this aside for a while since it does work now that I know the process. The only time it will be an issue is if the power goes out.

IBTW, I did use the installation process on http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5/pogoplug-v2-pinkgray. I just tried it again on a new USB FD and, again, it failed on the download of the fresh ALARM. The download is 131mb and I only have 121mb available on /tmp.

I'm going to look for solutions on the forum for this but I should be able to mount another USB FD to use as working storage so the ALARM disk remains pristine.

Again, many thanks for your help with this.
