package like pogoplug cloud service?

Postby tomcheng76 » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:11 am

What package should i install so that i can manage the file inside the server through web browser?

pogoplug can share/access the media through the private cloud services, and even stream the media.

It would be great if alarm can do this too. At least accessing file using web browser.

my alarm is using samba though. but it is not enough.

Any idea ?

p.s. Using goflex net with alarm installed.

There are many programs out there to do that task, lots of php stuff too. Google is your friend.

I, too, would like to know more about the tonido software on arch, however, the search function here does not cooperate as it's seen as too common a term and there isn't any real helpful info found via google. Also, is it necessary to smack down new folks with links to lmgtfy? That seems antithetical to the supposedly helpful nature of community forums.

I'm new here and would love to be able to be involved, but smarmy retorts just keep new folks who want to help and learn from each other away.

Any helpful info and experience using available cloud-like packages on alarm would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I guess I want to put the question in a different way: in a nutshell, how does a pogoplug serve files for streaming? what package do I need to install to achieve the same capability on an ALARM pogoplug?

There are a lot of different software packages out there, it really depends on what you want to do specifically. You can stream via DLNA, shoutcast, iTunes stuff with firefly/mt-daapd. You can set up "cloud" software for distributed storage, backups, web access, everything.

I'm not smacking down anyone with Google links, I'm telling you to just search for what you want to do. There are many ways to do things depending on what you're specifically after, way too many to just suggest off-hand let alone repeat every time someone asks this same question. This forum is full of questions on how to do various things, pointers to different software for different purposes that people have found useful. And if it's not here, someone else has asked the question and it's easily accessible through a Google search. When it comes to anything Linux, Google is your friend.

In the end, you have to be willing to actually make the software work for your situation. If the stock pogo software does what you need, and you don't want to dive into duplicating it, then don't. What we offer is a full Linux distribution for your device, not a pre-packaged and pre-configured out-of-the-box replacement for pogo software.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('kmihelich', 'I')'m not smacking down anyone with Google links, I'm telling you to just search for what you want to do.

My apologies, then, for misunderstanding and overreacting. I'm new to Arch (longtime Ubuntu user) and after being disappointed with shoddy performance and customization of the Pogoplug software, I decided to install Arch. So far I'm totally pleased.

However, personally I feel a little lost. More than half the the packages I've tried installing from the AUR fail to build and there doesn't seem to be a lot of help specifically for ARM. I spent two days this past weekend attempting to install Twonky, Mediatomb and the Tonido software, but they've all failed the PKGBUILD. I ended up loading miniDLNA (at first against my better judgement as it never worked correctly in Tomato on my router) and it is great...super stable and simple. I just feel like there isn't a load of info about Arch for ARM and it's easy get lost if you're a new. I'm still on the hunt for a remote file server...something like Subsonic but for data files rather than just music.

I'll keep plugging away, though...and thanks for the response.

Just to comment on the state of information on ARM builds: This is the exact reason & observation Linus Torvalds made when he threatened to completely expunge the ARM kernel workings. Poor documentation overall, lack of proper re-use, and a repo for ARM & ARM devices that was > 4x the size of x86.

ARM is a constantly evolving platform, and even Linus has now said that it is much better now that 6 months ago. Please feel free to ask us anything related to our distribution, and we'll do our best to help. Broad subjects though, we're more than likely to just google and see if we can correlate information that you might have missed. It's just an irk when people ask questions that have an answer withing the first 5 results of google.
