[RESOLVED-ISH] Pro / B01 SATA to eSATA not working

Postby 0123456789 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 3:37 am

Hi,

Devices:
PogoPlug Pro (archlinux)
PogoPlug B01 (stock)

Parts:
eSATA Dock:
Rosewill RX-DUS100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182197

SATA => eSATA Connector:
Rosewill RC-202 Internal SATA to eSATA II
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119021

Seagate 320GB SATA HD

Issue:

My HD does not show up on the PogoPlug (Pro or B01) if it is connected via SATA => eSATA Connector => eSATA enclosure.

Question:
Is there something special I am supposed to do in order to use a SATA to eSATA connection on the PogoPlug? I noticed the sticky about booting from SATA and it mentioned using eSATA, but nothing in it made me think what I am trying is wrong.

Troubleshooting:

Test SATA Port:
If I directly connect my HD to the PogoPlug (Pro or B01) using a regular SATA port I see the HD. (SATA => HD)

Test SATA=>eSATA Connection
I have a SATA to USB connector. If I connect USB => SATA => eSATA Connector => Dock (eSATA Port) the HD shows up

Test HD / Dock (via USB)
If I connect my HD via the Dock using USB the HD shows up. (USB=>Dock (USB Port))

Any ideas/suggestions/explanations would be much appreciated.

Update:

Seems some enclosures work and some don't.

This enclosure did NOT work:
BAD eSATA Dock:
Rosewill RX-DUS100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817182197

This enclosure DOES work:
GOOD eSATA Dock:
Thermaltake BlacX ST0005U

If you attaching this device after completed boot then you will need to tell the system to scan the bus
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '#!/bin/sh
echo "0 0 0" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/scan
')

Hi WarheadsSE,

Thanks for the suggestion:
I will play around with this tonight, but I did try rebooting after attaching the drive (SATA=>eSATA Connector=>Dock (eSATA PORT), and it still would not show up.

If I attached the drive directly via SATA (SATA=>HD), then it would show up. Maybe the PogoPlug doesn't like my enclosure for some reason.

Update #1

Tried the rescan on the B01 but it didn't make a difference. Newegg has a different enclosure on sale for $12 after rebate. I will give that a try to see if the enclosure is the problem.

Update #2

I guess the pogoplug is finicky about which SATA/eSATA enclosures it likes. The new one I got from newegg seems to work.

It looks like your Rosewill is missing something it wants to populate correctly, or just a chinese PoS.

It definitely doesn't like Rosewill, mine never worked with it either.
