goflex home unable to boot from SATA; ok w/ usb drive

Postby cohortcw » Fri Jun 08, 2012 10:52 am

Hi,

I really need help. Have been meddling it for 3 days in a row. In short, below is what I had done:

a. Follow the instructions from http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... oflex-home.
b. Rebooted with SATA 1TB but unable to config the correct MAC address successfully. The MAC address changes on each new reboot.
c. Wanting to fixed on to the MAC address to its original device, prepared a usb boot disk, flashed the UBoot to the latest (discovered some errors on checking and bypass them and flashing was a success.); http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/uboot/
d. Thereafter, I can no longer boot from SATA no matter how hard I tried.
e. Then my unit boot had gotten bad CRC, so re update the bootloader with step 16 of http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... oflex-home at the Ubit prompt.
f. Now I can see my unit is connected to network via the original MAC address. But I am still unable to boot from my SATA drive.

Any help will be great.
Tried for hours and hours but don't know if I am doing the correct way. Now i don't know what is the next step.

P.S. I am running Ubuntu 11.04 Guest OS VM on OSX. Tried to get info from netconsole but just could not figure out how to use even from the instructions i searched in this forum. I am a n00b to Linux. In fact, i started learning Linux only for this setup.

I don't believe the boot env doozan's uboot updater provides has sata boot setup. I'll try to remember to post my env setup script later, you'll need to get fw_printenv and fw_setenv installed and working in the mean time though.

Thanks. You are right that the latest uboot does not support booting from SATA. I managed to revert to original firmware and start all over again. However, I realised I cannot update the latest Linux version to support SATA because the latest pkg requires Debian to install. I encountered errors twice when I tried to install Debian Squeeze in order to update the Linux latest version which is in .deb. I am stuck now 'cause I cannot Debian to install.

The updated uboot DOES support booting from SATA, it's just not set to by default in the env. I'll post my script tonight. Update uboot, THEN run my script and you'll be able to boot SATA, have netconsole, etc like a normal ALARM install. Note my env boots SATA before trying to boot USB, so there is that one change.

That shows how I prepped my GoFlex Net. Note, the arcnumber is different for a GoFlex Home vs a Net so you'll need to update that in my horrible script.
