$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sethjvm', 'N')ot sure what that means other than it is not finding any external networks.

Unless you live in some very remote area, it is not very likely to happen these days. You can easily check that you do not have any other network around you indeed from any other wifi-capable device, like a smartphone.

If nobody else, your router should come up on the list as detected, even if there are problems with the security configuration. The fact that nothing detected makes it highly susceptible that the problem happens earlier than the connection phase.

I also recommend peeking into the dmesg logs, perhaps they contain some explanation what is happening.

What does 'iwconfig' print?

dmesg shows occasional exceptions on both plugs but nothing is consistent there. They'll both boot most of the time without any exceptions.

iwlist ra0 scanning returns nothing on the plug that isn't working with arch. I have three wireless networks all broadcasting their SSID's, two secured and one completely open. Can't see or connect to any of them with arch. Revert to pogo... works perfectly with any of them. Damned odd.

When I can take the other plug out of service for a while again I'll do some more testing.

Are you absolutely sure your interface is up and running? Does 'iwconfig' print ra0?

Yes. Absolutely certain. That's what is so confusing about it. From the plug side it just looks like there is no network and from the router side it just doesn't ever see the plug make a connection attempt. Everything else looks exactly like you would expect for a working setup from both perspectives.

I'll be making some time to dig into it further in the next few days. I'm just at a loss for where to start looking.

Same problem for me too..... tried to eliminate WEP key, tried with WICD, tried with iwlist but always same problem.... ra0 UP but no SSID founded!

@radtech,
Have you compared the 2 routing tables (.i.e. is the gateway the same?) between the working plug and one that does not?

Yes, well sort of. The configuration is for DHCP so the IP and gateway aren't assigned until the plug actually connects. I didn't just use the same set up, I also used the same drive making only the changes necessary for the other plug to boot properly (i.e. mac_addr...).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('radtech', 'F')rom the plug side it just looks like there is no network and from the router side it just doesn't ever see the plug make a connection attempt.

No wonder : the plug will not make an attempt to a network it does not know about.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('radtech', 'I')'m just at a loss for where to start looking.

Copying in 'iwconfig' output would be a good start. It has some diagnostic elements in it.

Here you go:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'ra0 Ralink STA ESSID:"" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Bit Rate=1 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
')

But I don't think you're following me. It "knows" about the network because it is configured properly. The reason I know this is that I'm using one drive and moving it between two different plugs and using exactly the same wireless configuration. One plug works and the other does not. This one plug simply fails to make any contact whatsoever with any of the routers I've tried to configure it for. No authentication attempts. Nothing. Zip. Nada. It does work, however, when using the built-in Pogo software so I know the NIC is functional. So if I know the NIC works and the configuration is good... then where do I start looking for the problem?

Mine looks like:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
ra0 Ralink STA ESSID:"Macinet" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.437 GHz Access Point: A0:21:B7:XX:XX:XX
Bit Rate=65 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX [2]
Link Quality=100/100 Signal level:-46 dBm Noise level:-70 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
')
If you are using exactly the same software on two pieces of the supposedly same hardware, and one works and the other does not, then indeed something weird is going on. But you are lucky at least to have a working example available.

The most obvious potential reason is that you have unintentionally flashed different kernels on each device (and a wrong one in the non-working case), or have something important difference on the internal drives. Try re-flashing, or comparing the dump of the NAND drives. Compare /usr/local/cloudengines/bin/blparam output on the two devices.

I would also make sure that the same external drive is plugged in the same slot without other drives. A different setup of USB devices may change the memory layout. Then (as recommended by bodhi earlier), a comparative analysis in the system logs may show something: for example, where does dmesg start to differ?

If still nothing comes up, you can try comparing reports in /proc, like iomem, meminfo, bus/pci/devices.
