$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('maihoaomv', 'T')he hwclock is still physically on the goflex home
From your answer its obvious, you're concerned, but also a bit confused.
Hwclock is not a chip, but a daemon (or system service if using systemd) that reads TOD memory at boot when accessible, or defaults to some date when not. If you insist on having TOD in your device (which I don't have in GoFlex Net either), put a new battery into it - how about that one?

Meantime, may I suggest you to set date with the above DATE command I mentioned earlier - did it work for you?
Another suggestion would be to boot your GFH from a USB Thumb instead of SATA HD, thus letting your HD to fall into deep sleep when not in use. I never reboot my Dockstar booted from a Thumb, unless to test something. After initial burn-in period its power consumption is low, and benefits of frequent reboots are scarce, if not damaging due to higher current required at boot time.
What Archlinux version you're running - it may determine your other options.
