PogoPlug Phones Home?

Postby sl33nyc » Sat Nov 03, 2012 5:13 pm

I've had my Pogoplug rooted and working flawlessly for a while now, but when the power but not the Internet was restored post-Sandy, I noticed that I could ping it but not telnet nor ssh to it. Maybe coincidentally, when the Internet came on, I could ssh to it again.

I doubt that the Pogoplug booted into my standard Arch Linux install on the attached USB stick. Was it booted to the Pogoplug's firmware? Does anybody have any idea what state the Pogoplug might've been in? If whatever state the Pogoplug was in meant "phoning home" to pogoplug.com, does anybody know whether I can just disable that permanently so the Pogoplug properly boots directly to the Arch Linux install and it (and any other storage) becomes accessible on my local network?

If it happens again and nobody knows has an answer to my previous questions, can anybody suggest some tests I can do to figure out what's going on? I figured that I should've done an nmap to see what ports were open, but is there anything else I can try?

"Phoning home" is disabled at Uboot install by Jeff's install script.

I can check versions on Dockstar after booting to OS:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'grep -a --null-data U-Boot /dev/mtd0ro # check Uboot version
uname -[a,r] # check OS version')

Hmm...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
> sudo grep -a --null-data U-Boot /dev/mtd0ro
U-Boot 2011.12 (Feb 20 2012 - 21:21:59)
Pogoplug E02U-Boot
** Invalid partition type "%.32s" (expect "U-Boot")
U-Boot BUG at %s:%d!
> uname -a
Linux dukie 3.1.10-13-ARCH #1 PREEMPT Mon Aug 20 15:46:18 UTC 2012 armv5tel GNU/Linux
')
That "Invalid partition type" error looks of concern.

What might have happened is when the power was lost, the main partition got corrupted so maybe that's why you couldn't ssh in. You are in alarm as kernel 3.1.10 -ARCH is the one from alarm. Check the boot drive on your computer for errors. (e2fsck) If it doesn't help you may want to activate netconsole as well in order to see what's going on while it is booting up.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sl33nyc', 'H')mm...

My working E02 has identical output to yours including the ** Invalid partition which I think is just a message format string.

Sorry for the confusion. That's not what I was referring to when i said that main partition might be corrupted. Invalid partition type is just one of the strings that grep can read. grep will show all the strings that have "U-Boot" in them at mtd0.

By main partition i meant the partition on the flash drive/hdd -> rootfs partition. mtd0 is the first partition in nand where u-boot is located.
