Files wrongly exist during network copy to NTFS volume

Postby FreaqyGeeq » Thu Jan 03, 2013 11:56 am

Hi guys.

A weird problem I'm having is this. With the latest build, if I copy a group of files over the network from either a Windows 7 or 8 PC to a shared NTFS volume on my Pp, I get a message during the copy telling me that some of the files already exist there, when they absolutely do not. If I tell Windows to go ahead and overwrite the files, the resulting copied files are fine. If I tell Windows to DO NOT overwrite the files, I end up with a few random 0k files which are of course no good.

This is only happening on shared NTFS volumes, using whatever built in NTFS tools exist, with SAMBA installed via pacman. I have tested copying the same files to shared exFAT volumes (through fuse-exfat) and EXT3 volumes and this problem doesn't occur. It doesn't matter what the file type or size is either, as I've tested and received the same result with pictures, MP3 files, etc.

This is a brand new ALARM install only a day old, and everything is working wonderfully, except for this one issue which is holding me back from deploying this unit at my parents' house. It's a black E02 Pogoplug, OS is on a 4GB Toshiba USB stick and the shared storage drive is a 1TB Seagate Expansion Portable.

Any thoughts on this guys? It's got me baffled. Many thanks in advance!

FG.

Are you logging into the Samaba share on the Win7 PC with the root account or a different user?

This is almost deja vu for me. I am also having the exact same issue, and I mean EXACT. The arch install is only about 2 weeks old, Samba installed via pacman, black PP E02 with Toshiba 4gb flash drive, WD Elements drive and some other HDD in an enclosure. I am logging into the Samba share not as root, but as another user which is listed as being in the adm and root groups. I believe this should be root level, but being new I am not 100% sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi UberSlackr. I've set up SAMBA with full public access, no credentials required, using the smb.conf file here as a basis: http://archlinuxarm.org/support/guides/ ... ions/samba.

Hi cambo357. That is truly freaky! :o If you're experiencing the same issue, I dare say we're not alone either. Nice to know I'm not completely losing my mind!

Also, since my original post, I've also upgraded ntfs-3g via pacman to the latest, but it didn't help—the problem still exists.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate it.

Were you able to resolve this issue: As I'm also experiencing this same problem.
It's become rather annoying, as I'm no longer able to select a set of file to copy over and walk away from the computer will it does its thing. I now have to wait, and ensure that I click "Copy and Replace" so that the files are properly saved.

Have the same issue. I think Moonman is working on it. I think this is the same problem.

He has something to try on the last thread.

I switched all my external hard drives to ext3 or ext4 format. Solved that problem for me. I am waiting until they have a fix and I may move to NTFS.

Switching to Ext is not a acceptable solutions; In my situation. My drives are TB Drives, containing much Data. And they are not stationary drives; meaning they do not remain attached to the ALARM box.
