speed up ntpd on boot?

Postby gschoppe » Fri Feb 22, 2013 3:55 pm

I have ntpd running as a service, to fix the system time. However, when I boot, it takes almost 5 minutes for the time to change from the Unix Epoch to current. how can I speed up the process? It's making my openvpn service time out.

So, it appears that ntpd, by design, is simply an extremely slow option, that is not suitable for applications where there is no hardware clock. I have switched back to openntpd, and all is well. However, openntpd is a deprecated package. Is anyone working on porting sntp?

Try changing to other time server? Try using your local country pool http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
nano /etc/ntp.conf')
Alarm + Samba + NginX + Php+ MySQL + phpMyAdmin on Raspberry Pi 3, Pogoplug 4, Pogoplug E02, Seagate Goflex Home

no dice... tried it, and syncing was still almost three minutes... the issue with NTPd is that it throws away over 90% of the traffic from the timeserver, due to minor latency issues, rather than using them as a rough correction and then improving from there. So, with an RTC, NTPd corrects to a very accurate time, given time to work. However, without an RTC, as with the pogoplug, NTPd simply isn't fast enough.

Perhaps you could start a fakeclock first, it would set time from last entries in /var/log/everything.log to be near the mark
Not a package http://myplugbox.com/fakeclock.tar.xz
