super noob wants to reset passwords

Postby ubdu » Mon Aug 26, 2013 8:31 pm

Ok, so I followed the instructions to install the special boot on the Pogoplug V2 and then archlinux on a USB drive. All was working fine a few months ago. However, I was just fooling around and trying to learn, and didn't have a use for a server yet.

Now I do, and I dusted off the Pogoplug, but I can't remember any passwords to anything - boot or linux. I've tried root, admin, & ceadmin for everything. Do I have any recourse here?

Either reinstall everything from scratch (link in my signature) or replace /etc/shadow file on your bootable media with the one from the official tarball. I have a feeling that you won't be able to do a full update since it might have been too long since you did it last time.

If you have linux installed somewhere, be it a physical machine or virtual, just login as root, mount your usb say at "/mnt" and use "chroot /mnt" into the usb. then use "passwd" to reset your root password.

You can't simply chroot into arm rootfs from x86.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('moonman', 'Y')ou can't simply chroot into arm rootfs from x86.

of course...... the arch is different, you are right.

how about mount usb somewhere, then try one of following:
1. play with .ssh/authorized_key. Need to understand "public key authentication"
2. play with /etc/shadow and the password setting of root. Need to understand "man 5 shadow" and potentially "man pam".

if your Pogoplug have a rescue system, you can always unplug everything, which boots to the rescue system, then reinsert your rootfs sdcard or usb or harddrive. Then do a chroot after mounting the disk. Then you can replace your passwd file or doing other rescue tasks
