Newbie ZYXEL NSA-320 Installation Questions

Postby shivahoj » Fri May 02, 2014 8:57 pm

Hello,
being not too happy with the stock firmware, i just downloaded and installed the latest archlinux (dont know which uboot, and also dont know how to find out)on a ZYXEL NSA-320.
I have a serial adapter hooked up, and i could see the thing booting. However, there are a few concerns:

1) I installed samba and edited /etc/samba/smb.conf.
but when i tried to start it, it gave:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@alarm ~]# time systemctl enable nmbd.service
Failed to execute operation: Activation of org.freedesktop.systemd1 timed out
real 0m25.040s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s
[root@alarm ~]#')
The same happens when i try to start or enable smbd.

2) The LEDs on the device dont work, only the blue Power LED and the highest orange (SYS) LED are up, all others dont do nothing. Neither does the power button, and "halt" gives:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[root@alarm ~]# halt
Failed to start halt.target: Activation of org.freedesktop.systemd1 timed out
Failed to open /dev/initctl: No such device or address
Failed to talk to init daemon.')
Do i really have to pull the power plug?

3) a Minor issue, but worth mentioning: I have no login on the serial console(i can enter text at the "Hit any key to stop autoboot: 2 ... 1 ... 0 " line in the minicom window that is echoed back to me), but the last line on the serial console is as follows:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', ' __ __ _ _

1) halt does not power off. It halts.
2) not having a serial console is .. odd.

everything else -- wtf mate not being able to connect to the systemd process.

Hello, i was using "halt" just as an example.
Also, shutdown and reboot both dont work.

I did a new install, (just in case), but now even ssh(d) doesnt work anymore, neither does serial console login, and i am locked out of the running machine.
BTW: in the http://os.archlinuxarm.org/os/nsa3x0/ directory, what are the NSA-320_uboot.ndi and NSA-320_uboot_env.ndi files, where are the differences, and how do i use them?

You should not be using either of them unless you toasted the piss out of your nand.

Basically, i did:
pacman -S uboot-env

(Stuff deleted)

[root@alarm etc]# nano /etc/fw_env.config
[root@alarm etc]# fw_setenv bootcmd 'run to_stock'
Then pulled the Power plug,since it doesnt powerdown, removed the USBstick, power it back up,
checked that stock firmware was reinstalled and started, when the original web GUI was up and running, i restarted with the USB stick plugged in.
Thats how i did it.

Okay. I wanted to be sure you did it safely. That was one of the safest methods.

I suggest this:
Power cycle it, switch to stock, then, from stock, at the serial console, switch back to linux without re-installing.
