Pogoplug v4 post installation woes (pacman -Syu went bad)

Postby tilllt » Fri Jun 06, 2014 1:36 am

Hey,

i followed the instructions how to install Arch Linux on my new Pogoplug v4. http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... g-series-4

Then i wanted to update the system using
pacman -Syu

Now i cannot login through SSH or ping the box anymore.
Was it that easy to brick it? Do i need a serial cable now? Or what else can i try.

cheers,t

It is not a brick.

Ok, not very helpful reply BUT it put me onto finding this:
http://archlinuxarm.org/support/reinstallation

so i am reinstalling now. Can anybody shed a light on why it is not advised to update the overall system with arch-linux and the pogoplug?

i am coming more from the debian / ubuntu league and a apt-get update && apt-get upgrade is a standard after a fresh installation for me...

cheers,
t.

Hey tilllt,

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t is not a brick.

I believe he means to say that it's unlikely you have damaged your device ("bricked" it). The problem most likely exists in the OS, not firmware/hardware.

A few people have had issues with the latest systemd package: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=7330 . It's the first failure caused by updating I have encountered in my 6 months of using ALARM, so I don't think this happens very often.

Keep in mind that Arch has a 'make sure you know how to fix things philosophy', so pay attention to any messages given when performing a pacman -Su and keep up to date with the announcements both for the main Arch projectand ALARM.

After installing the system, be sure to change to the linux-kirkwood kernel package, thus avoiding the issue with systemd. (it is 3.14+ anyways)

like this?

pacman -S linux-kirkwood

because that gives me:
error: failed retrieving file 'linux-kirkwood-3.14.4-1-arm.pkg.tar.xz' from mirror.archlinuxarm.org : The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -Sy linux-kirkwood')

Well, I would have suggested
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -Syy
pacman -Su
pacman -S linux-kirkwood linux-kirkwood-headers')
