Any way to reboot non-responsive PogoPlug E02 remotely?

Postby TWO515TY » Mon Jun 30, 2014 9:09 am

I'm hoping someone much smarter than I am can give me a random, magical suggestion that works, but I'm not sure if there's really a way to fix this remotely.

I have a PogoPlug E02 running ALARM that is connected to my router in my college apartment. It was set up for remote access so I could run Transmission, Motion, and a few other small things.I am currently 6 hours away at home for the summer. It had been running stable for several days, and was probably up for at least 2 to 3 weeks.

Today, I am unable to access it remotely at all. I logged into my router and it shows that my PogoPlug is listed as an active client with an IP address, but it is completely unresponsive to any connections that were previously working (SSH, Transmission, & Motion).

Now I have two questions:

First, what causes a PogoPlug running ALARM to just freeze up or become nonresponsive, with the only way to fix it being a reboot? This used to happen every once in a while, but it was never a big deal because I was there and could just unplug it and plug it back in. I'm wondering if there is something I can do to prevent this from happening again.

Secondly, is there any magical way to get it rebooted if it truly does have an active network connection?

Worst comes to worst, I can have a friend go into my apartment and reboot it, but I'd rather do it myself if I can. I'd have to mail him a key and then hope he doesn't throw wild parties at my apartment while I'm gone lol.

There is no way. Unless you can get someone to cycle whole building's power. It shouldn't lock up like ypurs does. Ive never had it happen to mine. For future reference get a plug adapter that can be controller over the internet or better yet figure out why it locks up.

When I do have this "need", I use an X10 socket. However, I've not had this problem, it is just me needing to boot-cycle things for development.

Not going to be a solution for you now, but I second the X10 recommendation.

I used to remotely (or actually automatically) reboot my router and dsl modem using X10. I had my router and dsl modem plugged into a surge protector which was plugged into an X10 device. My home server had a X10 USB to RF transmitter to control the X10 used from the surge protector. I had a script that monitored internet access and power cycled the surge protector when my internet went down. Simple and effective solution.

Probably wouldn't work so well on a Pogoplug though, since a unsafe power down will eventually corrupt the USB drive.

I'm still not exactly sure how this X10 socket works, but it sounds like a great solution to this problem. In retrospect, I should have left my NUC in my apartment instead of the PogoPlug, but I didn't think about it smh.

I'll either call on my friend to reset my PogoPlug every couple of weeks as needed, or see if he can help me plug in an X10 adapter if I buy one. If I can just SSH into my router and/or PogoPlug, I can configure the rest of it myself.

As to why it crashed, I wonder if the USB drive being corrupt or full could be a problem. My USB drive was 92% full last I checked, but I hadn't installed anything new. I will probably do a fresh install when I get back and see if that helps fix the random crashing.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
