AST2300 port (BMC)

Postby Znk » Thu Aug 07, 2014 4:01 pm

Hi all,

Not sure if this should either be under this cover or under the ARMv5 cover, so if it is wrong, I will delete or move it.

Anyway, since a few days I have a new motherboard (ASROCK C2750D4I), which features a BMC with IPMI (at least, that is how I understand the structure is), called the ASPEED AST2300.
However, the software is not good (this is a major understatement), which is probably made by someone on a Sunday evening. The software is unstable and is not resilient against multiple events: it locks, user accounts are missing, which causes services like NTP to not work properly.
Because this is a BMC device (which operates in a server station that is activated 24/7) it would be a good idea to have this software run stable, that's why I am looking at running Arch on the chip. D

The SoC is currently driven by a linux distribution. Form the research I did so far I think this is a software suite called MegaRac(R) SP-x. It has a ARM926EJ processor, which has the ARMv5TEJ architecture.

What I would like to know:
- Does anyone have experience with running custom software on BMC's and is this a good idea?
- How does a BMC/IPMI/SOC/OS work together?
- Is it possible just to flash Arch Arm on a BMC?

Thank you :)
