multi port/ power requirements goflex net

Postby joemegahertz » Sat Sep 27, 2014 3:50 am

Thanks to everybody's help My flex is running nice and fast with both sata ports filled... Which leads to my next problem/question!

I have read that the goflex net supports port multiplying. I have never messed around with this before on any system so I have been reading up on it. I was hoping if anyone else has done this if they could share their experience as well as answer a few questions. I' would like to add another 5 ports to my flex and so was looking at this http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SATA-Cables ... multiplier
Would this work?
now I now I will have to add my own power supply for the hdds i assuming 5w roughly (correct?) per 2.5 inch drive 5x5=25 watts. What is the most power efficient way to power this? The idea I had was a powered usb hub where I rub 5 USB cords from a rigged up molex to sata adapter running the 5V lines together after trimming off the molex end(with ground of course!) Bad idea? horrible idea?

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you again for everybodys help and support!

Horrible idea. Get an external enclosure that has a single sata line coming out, or a regulated power supply designed to supply 5v/12v.

Thank you for saving me from blowing up my hdds. :D I've been looking around for different ways to power everything. Looked at pico PSU but when taking into account the efficiency of the psu itself combined with the efficiency of the various power bricks it wasn't very good or cost effective. I have a very old server tower with 10 bays (good ol ide days) that I was hoping to use to hold all the additional drives. Been looking for a good psu, hard to find one small enough (wattage) wise that is still efficient for the drives. I may have to just go with 3.5 drives but was hoping to save money on the electricity bill with the 2.5 size instead.

Would I be correct in assuming my idea is horrible because the voltage wouldn't be stable with no circuity and just wires spliced?

Thanx again

Even some 2.5" drives still need that line. Some. All the same, improperly (or completely lacking) regulated power is a hoooooooooooooooooooorrible idea for storage media.
