Pogoplug Series 4: USB 3.0 drives not recognized anymore

Postby ivanjan » Fri Apr 17, 2015 3:50 am

Hello,

After upgrading yesterday to linux kernel 4.0, my pogoplug series 4 stopped recognizing usb 3.0 external drives.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'uname -a
Linux alarm 4.0.0-1-ARCH #1 PREEMPT Wed Apr 15 11:09:10 MDT 2015 armv5tel GNU/Linux')

lsblk does not show any external drives, besides the root drive connected to sata.
ls -la /dev/sd* has just the sata drive.
dmesg has no indications of any troubles. disconnecting and reconnecting does not show anything in dmesg.

Drives are simply not recognized, like they are not connected.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'lspci -v |grep -12 -i usb

I have tried the drives elsewhere, and they work just fine.
Any help, please?
Much appreciated.

According to this:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096,21196#msg-21196
it seems there a regression on kernel 4.0 which prevent USB3 to initialize properly USB3 at least on Kirkwood plugs.

BTW, kernel 4.0 is still in testing repos for archlinux for the i686 and x86-64 architectures. :o

If you can't downgrade for some reason: I figured that you can actually connect USB3.0 devices to the top USB 2.0 port. I connected a USB2.0 Hub to that port, and plugged the pen drive which contains the root fs to that hub. When I plugged external USB3.0 HDDs into that hub, they were recognized and usable (although not at full speed).

There are downgrade solutions in another thread for those affected by issues from upgrading to the 4.0 kernel. See the thread: viewtopic.php?f=53&t=8759 .

It is noted here: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096 that the 4.0 upgrade introduces problems for devices with USB 3.0. Downgrading the kernel will fix your issues. However, if you upgraded the kernel, you will also have network interface issues and probably can't access your device at all. Systemd needs to also be downgraded. Removing the USB drive with the OS, chrooting into your usb drive system (from another arch install), and then downgrading the problematic packages will get you back up without having to reinstall entirely from scratch (incase you didn't have a current working system backup). ---This takes just a few minutes if you have another Arch arm system available, and it definitely beats having to install all over and get the system and settings back to how you had it (unless you happen to have a good working and recent system backup somewhere!).

Systemd doesn't need to be downgraded, but rather it needs to be updated. Also issue with systemd only appears if you are using networkd (which has been enabled by default in rootfs). Users with static ip, or other than networkd services to get dhcp lease were unaffected.

Not yet. If 4.0.1 proves to be the same as 4.0, we will probably have to go back to 3.19.X

Hi,

I don't think the issue is USB3 specific per se, rather it because your USB adaptor is on the PCI bus, and there is a confirmed PCI bug in 4.0 affecting Kirkwood; please see my post here.

My USB3 drive is now working again for the Pogoplug Servies 4. Thanks moonman and sakaki!
I am running 4.0.3-1-ARCH + systemd 219.
I needed to reboot after running
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
# pacman -Syyu
')
