I needed to downgrade in order to get X back after:

Same error on rpi4

EDIT: downgraded xorg-server to 1.20.8-3 fixed it for me

1.20.9-2 seems to resolve the problem, though in Xorg.0.log I see a large number of
`FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument` errors...
