hw acceleration on rpi4b aarch64

Postby gofree » Tue Nov 10, 2020 11:21 am

Hi guys

currently Ive got installed arm7 version on my rpi4b and Im quite happy with it.

Used as: kodi stadalone ( for movies, youtube , etc ),samba, python development, k3s, containers , etc...

For some reasons I'm considering switch to aarch64 - only thing than worries me at the moment is the HW accelerated video playback in kodi - will it work ?

I know there are some major improvements in vc4 gpu driver planned for linux 5.10 ( rpi4 will become supported in mainline ) so should I wait ( end of year ) or its safe to switch to aarch64 now - only request is hw accelerated video in kodi-rbp4 ( standalone setup ) all other tasks are more server usage than gui

Currently there is no hw accel using aarch64. It might be possible with 5.10.y and with kodi v19 as the code improves.

Hey,

im using my rpi4 4gb as "nas".
My main desktop os is arch, so i wanted also run arch on the raspberry, but dont got the 64 bit and ssd usb boot working with the orginal arch after trying serveral of hours.

then i tried the minimal image or with the manjaro image installer, after flashing the iso to the ssd, started the raspberry HEADLESS with lan, and got it instantly working and flawless.
updated with the testing branch and installed the latest 5.10rc3 kernel, installed ffmpeg and HW accleration is working flawless with emby.

i dont know why arch is working with usb boot but manjaro is. im happy so far and hope arch will be updated soon to work with it.
also it feels faster than raspberry os 64 bit lite.

my config txt:
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
arm_64bit=1
gpu_mem=320
over_voltage=6
arm_freq=2100
gpu_freq=650

You are not the only one with USB boot problems on aarch64 ALRAM, see viewtopic.php?f=65&t=14672. But this is a separate issue from the HW acceleration.

Now you made me thinking about manjaro with 5.10rc kernel.

I might be mistaken, but even using the 5.10.y branch of the kernel/firmware, I do not believe you will get hardware decoding on aarch64 for kodi at this time.

https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=358136

If you want to build the 5.10.y kernel/firmware/bootloaders and test, see: https://github.com/graysky2/PKGBUILDs/tree/5.10.y

Beyond that, you will need to figure out how to adapt the kodi-rbp4-git package for aarch64. I tried a few times but was unsuccessful.

I tried manjaro on separate sd card -5.10rc3 - kodi 18.9 ( no luck to get 19b compiled ) - usage of cpu 70% playing Apocalypse now 1080p , arch arm7 cpu usage approx 7%. Furthermore libcec ( TV remote ) dint work either - so I guess its not wort it at the moment.

That's my point, if you read my kodi thread, it seems that aarch64 for RPi4 kernel is not providing 64-bit mmal libs and headers. So kodi will not use hw decoding at all.

thats really bad news :( is this for sure ? - I quote from the forum you posted above ....."wtf is going to happen with Matrix where rpi platform was removed and v4l2 accel doesn't seem to get any improvements from pi POV?"...stick with RPF kernels...so no real aarch64 support - do I get it right ?
