linux-rpi-16k-6.6.39-1 breaks USB 3

Postby pudge » Sat Jul 13, 2024 12:54 am

Tonight's Raspberry Pi 5 update broke the USB function.

Could not boot from USB SSD, boot up froze part way finished, when loading USB stuff
If booted from a uSD when a USB SSD was connected the system immediately froze.

Downgrading to linux-rpi-16k-6.6.37-2 and linux-rpi-16k-headers-6.6.37-2 fixed the problem.

I haven't checked yet if Raspberry Pi 4b has the same problem.

EDIT:
I have tested the RPi 4b and it is not affected, it works fine.

Further testing on the RP i5 with linux-rpi-16k-6.6.39-1
if you connect a USB SSD to to the RPi 5 USB 2 port it works OK.
If you connect the same USB SSD to the RPi 5 USB 3 port it immediately freezes
and fails to reboot.

Could be an upstream bug (linux kernel) or a downstream bug (RPi Foundation's fork). Try reporting here first and see what they say:make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_FULL, ' ', 'https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/new?assignees=&labels=&projects=&template=bug_report.yml', '', ' class="postlink"')

Could you update the PKGBUILD with the latest changes, @graysky? There might be a fix in 1abc413af44652d6a76d5b5c2afe90788595008e

Unfortunately, it didn't fix it. I've reported an issue here:make_clickable_callback(MAGIC_URL_FULL, ' ', 'https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/6270', '', ' class="postlink"')

The latest commit in the Rpi-kernel repo should contain a fix.

graysky
Thank you for fixing this issue. Much appreciated.
solskogen and nochtli thank you both for your help.

I have tested the linux-rpi-16k-6.6.40-1 and it fixes the problem.
I have KDE Plasma running on a Samsung T7 500GB USB SSD.
Works perfect so far.

I am going to do some further testing, if all goes well I am going to
create a new image.

EDIT:
Further testing on the RPi 5b with USB 3 SSD was good.
Also tested RPi 4b 8 GB with fresh install with linux-rpi-6.6.40-1 with Gnome on a USB 3 SSD and all went well.
