[SOLVED] Raspberry Pi 3B fails to boot since update

Postby lmn » Wed Apr 01, 2026 3:15 pm

I have updates my RPi last week and since then I have not been able to successfully boot ArchlinuxARM.
I have tested the official RaspberryPi OS from theis webseite and was able to boot that from a sd card.

I tried a clean installation of AarchlinuxARM but this also failed.

The boot seems to enter the system as the console is visible for a short time.

You can see the full system log from that boot here https:// lemen.xyz/etc/logs/journal.log
It seems that kernel starts hanging and the system becomes unresponsive.

Is this already known and is there a way to remedy this?

The kernel version installed is Linux version 6.18.18-3-rpi

Disable dynamic CPU frequency scaling? Try adding arm_freq=1400 (or your Pi's max rated speed) to /boot/config.txt. Does that boot?

I was able to boot the system with the config arm_freq=1400 and removing arm_boost=1.

While upgrading to 6.18.20-1 the following warning was issued:

WARNING: Kernel 6.18 breaks RPi4 armv7h. Downgrade, back up, switch to aarch64!

Does that extrapolate to the RPi3 or can this safely be ignored?

Yes, that's to blame. I didn't realize you weren't using the 64-bit package.

RPi Foundation removed bcm2711_defconfig with the 6.18 release due to the deprecation of ARM LPAE. This means that rpi-6.18.y branch of kernels for armv7h will NO LONGER BOOT RPi3/4 running armv7h (aarch64 is fine).

To be clear, you're able to boot the latest kernel using that extra option I recommended?

Yes I have booted the system with the linux-rpi kernel and these boot options.
I have successfully booted the following 6.18 kernels:
linux-rpi-6.18.1-1-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.1-2-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.3-1-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.4-1-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.7-2-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.8-1-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.12-1-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.16-2-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.18-3-armv7h
linux-rpi-6.18.20-1-armv7h

I'm glad to hear that the initial assessment that this was not possible can be possible with that boot parameter.

Considering the deprecation I will change to aarch64 in the future.

I'm I right to assume that this thread [1] is still relevant?
I.e. reinstalling a fresh aarch64 image and copy over relevant files and configuration?

I was running armv7 mostly because it's the first section in the installation guide [2].
Should this guide be updated as this configuration is not supported anymore?
Also the update message for the kernel should mention the other RPi Models not just RPi4.
Is there a way to report this outside the forum?

I think the broad strokes are captured there.. It isn't too difficult unless you have a very elaborate setup.
