Goflex Home initial installation – Am I on the right track?

Recently I bought a 2TB Seagate Goflex Home. I followed the installation guide at http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 ... oflex-home, and the installation went smoothly. It looks all great. Thanks.

The MAC address was not set to the sticker one. So I followed viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1418&p=10434, set the MAC address using the fw_setenv command. Success. So now I have a little Linux machine running for all kinds of possibilities.

Being a person with limited knowledge of Linux, I would like to get a confirmation on my understanding of what has been done and what should be done. Thanks in advance.

1. The installation procedure created a 20G partition for Arch Linux. This is the partition on which we will install various packages.
2. The rest (partition 2, /dev/sda2) has not been formatted. So I need to use mkfs to format it and then mount it. Am I right that ext3 is a preferred choice given my main purpose is NAS?
3. Then I need to install the samba package and configure it for NAS. This must be done by editing the smb.conf file. Right?

With that big or a partition, you might want to look at ext4.

I'm in the same position with my brand new 2TB GoFlex Home, except I haven't yet figured out how to (confidently/safely) get back to the U-BOOT environment to use the fw_printenv & fw_setenv commands. I could just leave the MAC as it is, but it would be nice to make it match what's on the label for future convenience.

The installation went without a hitch and I'm glad I took the plunge; it did take a lot of research to reassure myself that it was safe enough to do so, though - i.e., how to go about reverting to factory condition if need be. It would have been reassuring and saved me a lot of time if the installation instructions included the necessary steps to restore

EDIT: discovered I can simply ssh to ALARM and start /sbin/ubit_start - however, this gives the message:

You need to reboot once to let U-Boot set its default environment
before you update the ethaddr setting with this cached value.

Have already rebooted once or twice... do I have to do something else to make it take this cached value?
