Newb question

Postby emets31 » Sun Jan 20, 2013 1:40 am

Hello all :)

I am fairly new to the Linux World, but I am eagerly trying to learn. Most of my time with Linux has been spent with Ubuntu and Edubuntu, as well as Raspian with my RPi. But, I am trying to branch out and learn other Distros, and this has led me here. I have also built a small HTPC that I plan on installing XBMCuntu on, but I haven't installed it yet. I managed to get a Pogoplug E02, and I have been trying to figure out my best plan of action.

Which brings up my question - what is the advantage of installing archlinux ARM on my Pogoplug? I am in no way trying to troll or be disrespectful in any way, this is a genuine question. I have tried the Pogoplug software with success, and I haven't been able to find a clear advantage to installing Linux and possibly Samba, so I humbly ask if someone can point me in the right direction. I managed to install Debian on the Pogoplug, and I am planning on switching that to ARM. I have seen blogs about using ARM and Samba in conjunction with Sickbeard on the device, but what else can I do with it?

TIA for your time and comments/suggestions! :D

I've got a couple of plugs, one is a media server for my Tivos using pyTivo. Uses a lot less electricity than using a pc for the job. I also use it with samba to provide file shares and a place for automatic backups for my pcs,as well as sharing a printer with cups ( also allows printing with my apple devices)

Another box is located used to monitor security cameras and record any activity. It also has a simple webpage that provides a fresh picture from each camera every few minutes.
The standard pogo software is fine if you want to share stuff in the cloud, but for sharing at home samba is better. In the end, these little boxes can do a good job at many light tasks at much less power and expense sa PC.

Are you sure it's called XBMCuntu ?
Arch uses latest released software, more or less as soon as the x86 boys pick up a new release, so do we.

Thanks for the quick replies, and the info. And lol, sorry for the typo. I meant XMBCbuntu

Thanks for the tip about Samba being better for my home network. I have various cloud accounts with Pogo and other companies, so I'll keep those and set up my Pogoplug with Samba to utilize here at home. Out of curiosity, what other things can I do with it? I wouldn't mind picking up more of them to replace some of the PCs I am using as low-end servers.

I use transmission-daemon + flexget for torrent downloads and scheduled torrent downloads through RSS. You can use transmission-remote-gui to control transmission from any computer + tranmsission remote from my android phone. :)
