Anyone own a RiP3?

Anyone own a RiP3?

Postby graysky » Sun Mar 13, 2016 4:58 pm

I was very happy to see we have the installation instruction up for this new device. Are there any users out there with one running Arch ARM?

Yes, nothing to write home about at this stage.

For the time being the RPi 3 shares the same files with the 2 so assuming your system is up to date you can use the same SD on both systems and swap forth and back (the image is just slightly bigger for device-specific integration).

Thanks for the replies, all. Think I'll wait for supply to catch up to demand (currently $50 for a $35 board). Did either of you guys find any truth in the claim that the RPi3 runs hot?

The report suggests to add a (passive) heat sink which was already recommended for the RPi2. With this no issues so far.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('andiling', 'F')or the time being the RPi 3 shares the same files with the 2 so assuming your system is up to date you can use the same SD on both systems and swap forth and back (the image is just slightly bigger for device-specific integration).

So armv7h and armv8h backwards compatible, in this case?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv8/broadcom/raspberry-pi-3', '
')The current installation uses the 32-bit Raspberry Pi 2 armv7h root filesystem. This will be changing eventually to use our AArch64 repository to take full advantage of the ARMv8 Cortex-A53 cores.

Is there a project timeline for this to happen? Thanks!

Whenever the foundation gets off their ***** and does the kernel work to support ARMv8 properly.

(And no, a flag in the bootloader does not count)

As for the SoC: ARMv8 can run code of ARMv5 and higher but not vice versa. And the Cortex-A (like in the RPi 3) can run 64bit and 32bit OS.

As for the RPi itself: The "compatibility" is one major drawback of the 3 as it prevented any major innovation. I guess we need to look forward to a C Rev.

You need to look forward to the Foundation not locking into the "one true platform" as they have continued to do, and make all images the same across all of their various devices. They continue to make backward compatible hardware and identical software.

I don't see them breaking out of this model for the foreseeable future.

I don't have techinical knowledge you guys do. Let me try to summarize your comments. Is it correct that the pi 3:

1) requires kernel support to run true 64-bit code?
2) will currently run ARMv7 which is only 32-bit code?
3) no short term plans or timelines have been set to bring ARMv8 into the realm of 64-bit code?

My crude understand of 32-bit vs. 64-bit has to do with the ability to address >4 G of memory ... At least on Intel mainstream desktop or server chips like the core series. What are the practical limitations of running ARMv7 on the Pi3?
